SNV, Netherlands Development Organization. Kenya Market Led Dairy Program January 2012 - June 2019
The Kenya Market-led Dairy Programme (KMDP) was a 6 year programme funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The programme started 1st July 2012 and is implemented by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in collaboration with stakeholders in the dairy industry. The overall goal of KMDP is to contribute to the development of a vibrant dairy sector with beneficiaries across the value chain.
We have been part of KMDP since 2012 with our role being on capacity development in the dairy value chain working from farm to processor on improved quality, productivity and organizational development for primary cooperatives. We are currently working with two processors, Meru Union and Happy cow and 17 cooperatives, 2 of which are suppliers of Happy Cow and 15 affiliates of Meru Union. Working closely with Meru Union we have been able to support Meru Union to develop an extension model and supported them to reach over 10,000 farmers with training on fodder preservation (maize silage), dairy husbandry practices, calf rearing and quality improvement. We developed a model of service provision on silage making at full cost recovery from the farmers. We also trained all the cooperatives on good governance, leadership and financial management.
