The overall focus of the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) Program for Food is food safety, improved quality, value addition and capacity building of the dairy and horticulture sectors with emphasis on control of residues and certain contaminants. We are working in both the horticulture and dairy components of the program. In horticulture we are working closely with the Nyandarua County Government and various competent authorities including KEPHIS, PCPB and HCD to address SPS and food safety issues in the value chain. The private sector/farmer organization partner is Aberdare Fresh Produce Cooperative. Our role includes conducting situational analysis, technical support for the for Aberdare Fresh Produce

Supporting the project on activities related to market access for their target groups in Makueni, Embu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Narok and Kiambu Counties. We supported the Local Implementing Partners and Care givers understand and embrace market-based solutions through capacity building including training, aggregation and market linkages across the selected value chains.  

The Kenya Market-led Dairy Programme (KMDP) was a 6 year programme funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The programme started 1st July 2012 and is implemented by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in collaboration with stakeholders in the dairy industry. The overall goal of KMDP is to contribute to the development of a vibrant dairy sector with beneficiaries across the value chain. We have been part of KMDP since 2012 with our role being on capacity development in the dairy value chain working from farm to processor on improved quality, productivity and organizational development for primary cooperatives. We are currently working with two processors, Meru Union and Happy cow and 17 cooperatives, 2 of which are suppliers of Happy Cow and 15 affiliates of Meru Union. Working closely with Meru Union we have been able to support Meru Union to develop an extension model and supported them to reach over 10,000 farmers with training on fodder preservation (maize silage), dairy husbandry practices, calf rearing and quality improvement. We developed a model of service provision on silage making at full cost recovery from the farmers. We also trained all the cooperatives on good governance, leadership and financial management. Mapping of Producer cooperatives/groups in Tharaka Nithi and Meru Counties

Development of a milk dispensing business plan/market entry strategy for Limuru Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society. The strategy was aimed at helping Limuru Dairy Farmers Cooperative enter into new milk markets using emerging technologies such as dispensing.

Implementing a 6 months program aimed at strengthening capacity of livestock marketing groups. We are working in Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties with beef cattle, goat and sheep marketing groups.

Capacity development of milk producer groups in Kajiado and Narok. Tasks include mobilization, organizational development and market linkages, training on milk production, hygiene and handling,

Financial management training for Fair-trade certified Producer organizations (Coffee, and tea value chain), coaching and mentorship for select producer organizations towards improved financial management. (Malawi)
